Ernest F. hartz - 1967 (Covell)


Hartz was dedicated to Davis In the ‘40s he opened  Hartz Motor Co. Ford dealership at 430 G St.  He knew a lot of people in the business and would often travel to the manufacturing plant in Milpitas to watch cars being built that he would sell.  He earned a pilot’s license after taking lessons from two local WWII pilots.  

He also:

—Helped start up Little League baseball

—Sponsored the Thunderbirds Babe Ruth League from 1950 through 1953

—Started the Punt, Pass and Kick competition for children 6–10 years old, a sponsor ‘61, ‘62

—Chairman of a committee that organized and formed a Chapter of DeMolay for young men in 1959

—President, Davis Rotary Club

—Member, Yolo Shrine Club

—Public Works Planning Committee ‘55–57

—1956 Davis Redevelopment Committee

—Davis City Council from 1960–62 and "narrowly lost being the mayor when the dice literally didn’t roll in his favor.”

And from the July 5 Enterprise article, he served on:

—Urban Renewal Advisory Committee (1955)

—The City’s Business License and Ordinance Committee (1956)

—The City’s bond issue, sales tax, and capitol improvement committees (1956).
